The world of Formula 1 is not just about what happens on the track—it’s also a fierce competition behind the scenes. Young drivers must seize every opportunity, or they risk losing their hard-earned seats. One driver currently under immense pressure is Jack Doohan.
After being promoted from Alpine’s young driver academy, Doohan secured a full-time Formula 1 seat in August 2024. However, Alpine’s recent decision to sign Franco Colapinto as a reserve driver has sparked doubts about Doohan’s long-term future with the team. Colapinto had already caught the attention of the paddock during his nine-race stint replacing Logan Sargeant at Williams, making his rapid recruitment by Alpine even more significant.
Is Doohan’s Contract Limited to Five Races?
Rumors circulating in the paddock suggest that Jack Doohan may have only signed a contract for the first five races of the season, with Colapinto potentially taking over at some point. If true, this would mean that Doohan has no room for mistakes.
Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert shares this concern. He believes that Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore wouldn’t hesitate to replace Doohan with Colapinto at the slightest mistake. Speaking to Casinoutanspelpaus, Herbert stated:
"I believe Jack Doohan is already under a lot of pressure. He absolutely has to be as competitive as Pierre Gasly. I know Flavio Briatore very well—if Doohan makes even the smallest mistake, he’ll lose his seat in the blink of an eye."
Herbert also emphasized the cutthroat nature of the sport:
“Unfortunately, that’s just the way Formula 1 works. Things aren’t always smooth sailing in this sport.”
Colapinto’s Presence Looms Over Doohan
One of the biggest challenges for Doohan is Colapinto’s constant presence within the team. Not only does this add to the psychological pressure, but it also ensures that Briatore and Alpine management keep a close eye on Colapinto.
Herbert elaborated on this situation:
"Right now, everything depends on Doohan. He carries a heavy burden because Franco Colapinto will always be around, watching from the garage. He’ll be seen on TV standing behind Briatore or near the team. This is when doubts start creeping in, and doubt is the last thing a driver wants."
The pressure is on for Doohan, and the first few races of 2024 could define his career. Will he rise to the challenge and prove his worth, or will Colapinto seize the opportunity? The coming months will provide the answers.
