One of the most beloved book series in British literature, Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, is making a return—this time as a television series. The cast for the highly anticipated show, which is set to stream on HBO, is gradually being revealed.
American entertainment giant HBO has officially confirmed several major names joining the project. British actors Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer, and Paul Whitehouse are among those set to appear in the series. Frost will portray the lovable half-giant Rubeus Hagrid, while the distinguished Janet McTeer will take on the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu will bring to life the complex character of Severus Snape, and Paul Whitehouse will embody the ever-grumpy caretaker, Argus Filch.
Earlier in February, HBO had already announced that acclaimed American actor John Lithgow would play the iconic role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
Filming for the series is expected to commence this summer, with the first episodes potentially airing in early 2026. However, fans are still anxiously awaiting the announcement of the actors who will portray the central trio: Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
HBO has emphasized that the casting process will prioritize inclusivity. Applications are open to candidates regardless of ethnicity, gender, physical disability, race, or sexual orientation. Reportedly, more than 30,000 submissions have been received for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione alone.
Applicants for these roles must be between the ages of 9 and 11 as of April 2025 and must reside in the UK or Ireland. Candidates are asked to submit two videos—one featuring them reading a short story or poem, and another where they introduce themselves. They are also encouraged to speak in their natural accents during the auditions.
The series is set to span seven seasons, with each season adapting one of the original Harry Potter books. The film versions previously starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the lead roles.
Radcliffe has shared his excitement about the new project but has made it clear that he does not plan to participate in the series. “I’m happy to be watching from afar, just like everyone else,” he commented.
