The new Renault Austral: Where bold design meets smart comfort

Renault continues its bold move to refresh its product range, and after the Espace, it’s now the Austral’s turn to receive a thorough makeover. However, this update goes beyond just aesthetics—Renault claims that the revamped Austral delivers a more refined, quieter, and comfortable driving experience.

The most striking updates are seen in the front design, which draws inspiration from the Renault Rafale. The new grille is more angular and seamlessly integrates the brand’s updated diamond logo without disrupting the bonnet. The daytime running lights no longer hang low, instead they’re designed like airplane wings and embedded directly into the front bumper.

At the rear, changes are more subtle. Although the taillights maintain a similar shape, they’re now slightly shorter. Unlike many modern SUVs embracing full-width LED signatures, Renault has opted for a simpler, more restrained look.

Inside, the digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 12-inch infotainment display remain, but now with enhanced capabilities thanks to a Google-supported system that offers expanded app support and personalization.

New seats offer improved ergonomics with additional padding, enhancing driving comfort. A driver-recognition camera placed on the A-pillar can identify the user and automatically activate their saved preferences—such as seat position, favorite media, main menu layout, and Google app settings—once a user profile is created.

Renault also emphasizes the improvements made in cabin insulation. New door seals, better engine bay insulation, and quieter side mirror bases contribute to a more serene driving environment. In the Alpine trim, laminated front windows further reduce noise, while re-engineered engine mounts help dampen vibrations.

The rear seats can be folded 60:40, slid forward or backward by 16 cm, and reclined at three different angles (25°/27°/29°). With over 27.4 cm of knee room and more than 90 cm of headroom, rear passengers can enjoy exceptional long-distance comfort. The electric tailgate ensures easy access, while a 12V socket adds convenience. Depending on the engine choice, luggage capacity reaches up to 555 liters.

The new Austral is offered with a 160 hp 1.3L mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine and a 200 hp 1.2L three-cylinder E-Tech full-hybrid option. One of its standout features is the 4Control Advanced system, which integrates rear-wheel steering with a multi-link rear suspension. This allows the vehicle to have an impressively small turning radius of 10.1 meters, enhancing agility in urban settings.
